Fantasy Six: Measles
Fantasy Six: Measles
You didn't know that according to the CDC, 3 percent of the vaccinated/immune population can contract Measles - still. You didn't know that anyone can lose the original protection of many vaccines as we age. Those memory cells that attack infection die. You had been protected by herd immunity for a while now. But, the internet being what it is had, over the years, created a growing mass of flat Earthers and anti-vaxxers. That sucks for you.
It was on a Tuesday that you first felt ill. You had a mild cough, a mild fever, a runny nose and sore throat. But, it was early spring in New England. You thought it was allergies or a cold.
A few days later, when tiny white spots with bluish white centers on a red background appeared in your mouth, and not your body, you wondered out loud what you had eaten.
By the time you made it to a doctor, you not only had the skin rash but pneumonia had set in to lungs and encephalitis to brain. That's what ultimately got you in the end. You pass at the hospital weeks later in a make shift Measles wing due to a local outbreak epidemic. You have had no visitors while there but the constant, unwelcomed companionship of a cranky roommate who made your last days miserable. Your nurse? A former student of yours that you made untoward comments to in class. Let's say, she did only what she had to.
